About Me
Hello! I was born in Seoul, South Korea, and lived there until 2015. There I studied drawing and painting under artist Ha Tae Shim. I was formally trained in graphite, charcoal, pastel, pen and ink drawings, as well as watercolor and acrylic painting.
In 2015 I attended California Institute of the Arts to pursue my BFA in Scenic Design. I was able to study 3D model making, scenic painting, digital modeling and rendering for a variety of productions, including film, dance, theater, and live events. I graduated in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. All my production design opportunities were canceled, so I studied Interior Design for a few years before going into Art Education in 2025. I am currently a student at CSULB, obtaining my art-teaching credential and gaining hands-on experience in classrooms.
I have always had a profound respect for educators. Part of this was likely cultural, having grown up in Korea, a country where education is almost over valued. Mostly, this respect grew from having educators that genuinely cared for their students and understood that kindness goes a long way with a student- especially one who is struggling with undiagnosed ADHD and depression, as I was. Educators have been role models for me for as long as I can remember.
My free time is largely dedicated towards my art practice. I tend to explore a variety of themes, including identity, race, gender equality, body neutrality and autonomy, mental health, and more regarding social justice. As a disabled, neurodivergent Korean woman living in the US, I see an immense need for basic rights, education reform, and increased support for minorities in this country and globally-especially under the current administration.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me and my practice as an educator, artist, and activist.
Jiwon.
(California Institute of the Arts, CalArts)에 입학하여 무대미술(Scenic Design) 학사 학위를 취득하기 위한 과정을 밟았습니다.
